Are you considering BambooHR to take some weight off your HR department’s shoulders? I tested it to see how well it handles everyday tasks like tracking employee info, managing time off, and running performance reviews.

I’ll walk you through a BambooHR review and explain what works well, what could be better, and whether it’s the right choice for your team. I’ve also included a few alternatives in case BambooHR doesn’t check all your boxes.

BambooHR overview

Before diving into the specifics, here’s the short version:

Bamboo HR is an all-in-one HR software platform that’s built for small to mid-sized teams that want to simplify and automate their core HR processes. Think employee management: records, hiring, onboarding, payroll, benefits administration, and performance management — all in one clean, intuitive dashboard.

BambooHR review

What makes BambooHR stand out (and why I wanted to test it in the first place) is its emphasis on user experience. It’s clearly designed for HR professionals who don’t want to spend hours learning a new HR tool, and for employees who prefer self-service over paperwork or Slack DMs. It removes the clunky backend most HR solutions are known for and replaces it with something that actually feels modern.

It’s also refreshingly flexible. Whether you run a small business or a growing company with multiple departments and pay structures, BambooHR lets you scale without needing a full-time admin to maintain it. You can start with the essentials (like time-off tracking and employee records), then layer in tools like payroll, benefits management, or advanced analytics as your team grows.

I also appreciate that BambooHR doesn’t pretend to be everything. It’s not trying to compete with SAP SuccessFactors or giant enterprise suites. Instead, it focuses on doing the HR fundamentals extremely well, and giving HR teams, managers, and employees the tools they need to stay aligned, compliant, and productive.

BambooHR pros

  1. Intuitive user interface that’s easy for both HR teams and employees to navigate. Even non-technical users find BambooHR’s dashboard simple to work with, making adoption quick and smooth across departments.
  2. A centralized employee database reduces manual admin work. All employee information is stored and managed in one place, making it easy to update records, track changes, and stay compliant.
  3. Smooth employee onboarding and offboarding workflows. HR teams can automate checklists, documents, and tasks for both new hires and exiting employees, thereby improving consistency and reducing errors.
  4. Strong built-in reporting and custom analytics (especially in higher plans). HR professionals can create real-time reports and dashboards without needing to export to Excel or rely on IT.
  5. Responsive and helpful customer service. Users frequently highlight BambooHR’s customer support team as knowledgeable and quick to resolve setup or usage issues.

BambooHR cons

  1. Limited customization options, especially in lower-tier plans. Workflows, fields, and UI layouts can be rigid if you’re not on the Pro or Elite tiers.
  2. Applicant Tracking and Benefits Administration are not as advanced as those of competitors. Users report missing deeper automation and conditional logic in these modules.
  3. Users occasionally report bugs or system lag. They experience slow load times or glitches, especially in the web interface.
  4. It can become expensive for small businesses once add-ons are included. Pricing rises quickly when adding payroll, time tracking, or performance modules.
  5. Limited scalability for large or complex organizations. For companies with 500 or more employees, Bamboo HR may feel too lightweight without deep integrations or configurability.

BambooHR features

Let’s talk about what BambooHR actually does. Because behind the clean UI and cheerful branding, this HR software packs a seriously efficient set of tools, especially if you’re managing a growing team and feel buried under HR tasks.

From benefits administration to performance management, here’s how BambooHR handles the day-to-day HR functions that keep your people operations running.

1. Centralized employee records

First up: the core of any good HR solution — your employee information system.

BambooHR is a hub for all your employee data: job titles, salary changes, emergency contacts, signed docs, certifications, even customizable fields for things like shirt size or remote equipment preferences. You can segment records by department, location, or employment status.

As an HR manager, I’m always looking for a way to reduce admin chaos, and this is it. No more spreadsheets, no more “can you resend their offer letter?” moments.

Plus, the employee self-service portal means people can update their personal information themselves (address changes, banking info, or time off requests) without pinging HR every time.

If you want a human resources platform that actually respects your time, this is a win.

2. Recruiting and applicant tracking

The applicant tracking system is built into BambooHR, and it’s one of my favorite features.

You can create job postings and publish them to top job boards like Indeed or ZipRecruiter with a click. From there, everything (resumes, scorecards, interview feedback, candidate emails) gets pulled into a clean hiring pipeline.

I liked how it supports collaborative hiring. Your hiring managers, executives, and HR team can all review and comment on candidates, without stepping on each other’s toes. Permissions and notifications are customizable.

When it’s time to send an offer, BambooHR lets you build offer letters right in the system and get e-signatures without sending a single email. It feels like hiring in 2025 should feel.

One small software advice tip: if you’re juggling multiple openings, BambooHR makes it easy to clone job templates and reuse stages across roles, which is a huge timesaver.

3. Onboarding and offboarding

Onboarding is where many HR tools stumble, but BambooHR gets it right.

You can automate the entire onboarding workflow, from digital paperwork and direct deposit forms to “meet the team” messages and IT handoff. It’s checklist-based, so nothing gets dropped. I created a full onboarding flow in about 30 minutes, complete with due dates and auto-reminders.

New hires fill everything out before Day 1, and you can include welcome notes or culture intros that make it feel human, not transactional.

Offboarding mirrors the same logic: task assignments, final pay forms, and exit interviews. It’s a smooth experience on both ends of the employee lifecycle.

This is honestly one of BambooHR’s best HR features, especially for small or mid-sized businesses that don’t have time to reinvent the wheel every time they hire.

4. Time off and time tracking

Here’s a quick overview: BambooHR includes leave tracking by default, and time tracking as an optional add-on. Both are worth exploring.

The time-off tool is simple: employees request leave, managers approve it, and accruals update automatically. There’s a shared “Who’s Out” calendar so you’re not guessing who’s on vacation next week.

For more detailed employee monitoring, the Time Tracking module covers clock-in/clock-out, overtime rules (by U.S. state), project-level tracking, and mobile punches. It syncs with Payroll, which cuts a ton of back-and-forth during pay runs.

You can also assign hours to clients, locations, or teams, which is helpful for billable work or cross-functional reporting.

If you’ve been managing all this manually in spreadsheets, you’re going to feel like BambooHR just handed you back 5 hours a week.

5. Payroll (United States only)

This is only for U.S.-based companies, but BambooHR Payroll is a tightly integrated module that can save your HR team a ton of time.

Everything is synced, from employee pay rates and hours worked to taxes and deductions. When you update something in their profile, the changes are reflected immediately in payroll, with no duplicate entry.

The platform handles federal, state, and local tax filing, generates W-2s, and gives employees a full self-service pay portal. You can set multiple pay schedules, manage salaried + hourly employees, and even automate benefits management deductions.

One thing to keep in mind: Payroll is an add-on, not included in the core plan, but if you want everything under one roof, it’s worth it.

6. Benefits administration (United States only)

BambooHR lets you build out your own benefits plans (health, dental, vision, 401(k), life insurance) and let employees enroll directly in the portal.

It supports open enrollment windows, qualifying life events, and carrier exports. Admins can track who’s enrolled, who’s missing documents, and whose forms still need to be signed. Meanwhile, employees get a no-stress way to compare plans and make selections.

If you’ve ever spent weeks collecting paper forms and chasing down signatures, this is your sign to stop. Just set it and forget it.

7. Performance management

BambooHR’s performance management tools go beyond basic employee performance reviews; this is one of the few HR software platforms where it feels like feedback is built in, not bolted on.

You can run a review cycle that includes self-evaluations, manager feedback, and peer feedback. Set goals, schedule 1-on-1s, and keep private notes throughout the year. The system sends reminders so reviews actually happen (and don’t get quietly skipped for Q3).

I found the employee performance evaluation templates surprisingly flexible. You can create different formats for different roles, and update questions mid-cycle if needed.

It’s simple enough that people actually use it. And that’s half the battle in performance management.

8. Analytics and dashboards

This is where it gets juicy if you’re a data nerd, or if your HR leader wants to impress the CFO.

You get standard reports (headcount, turnover, time-off trends), but the Elite plan unlocks custom dashboards, benchmark data, and even AI-powered tools like sentiment analysis from surveys.

You can build reports using any field in the system, from salary bands to department-level attrition. No formulas, no spreadsheet cleanup.

For business owners or executives, this means real-time visibility into trends that matter, without waiting for human resources to prep a slide deck. For HR professionals, it means way less time gathering data and more time acting on it.

BambooHR reviews

The intuitive interface, employee record management, and streamlined HR workflows are some of the biggest highlights, according to reviews on Capterra. Many users also praise BambooHR’s ability to centralize everything from PTO to onboarding tasks, which makes it a great place for small to mid-sized teams.

Customer support earns positive mentions, especially during setup. HR managers frequently point out how easy it was to get started and how helpful the support team was during implementation and troubleshooting.

On the flip side, some users experience software glitches or slow load times, particularly when navigating more complex workflows. While these aren’t deal-breakers, they show up often enough to be noticeable.

The payroll module seems to be another sticking point. Users say it’s not always easy to integrate, and configuration can be challenging, especially if you’re trying to sync it with other systems or update tax settings across states.

Finally, several small businesses mention that BambooHR can get pricey once you start layering in add-ons like time tracking, performance management, or benefits administration. The core tools are solid, but going “all in” can stretch budgets for smaller teams.

Despite those drawbacks, BambooHR still maintains high user ratings, with Capterra users especially appreciating the platform’s focus on simplicity, automation, and centralized employee data.

BambooHR pricing

BambooHR does not publicly display exact pricing, but they do specify two pricing models:

  • For 1–25 employees: You’ll pay a flat monthly rate (not per employee). The exact price depends on selected features and plan.
  • For 26+ employees: Pricing switches to a per-employee, per-month (PEPM) model. You’ll receive automatic volume discounts as your headcount increases.

No annual contract; subscriptions are month-to-month. You can cancel or adjust your plan at any time.

BambooHR offers a free version, allowing you to try the platform before making a payment. There’s also a 14-day free trial just for the Time Tracking add-on, which is sold separately.

Three paid plans include the following:

  • Core: Covers essential HR features (employee records, time-off tracking, onboarding, etc.)
  • Pro: Includes everything in Core plus Performance Management, eNPS surveys, advanced workflows, and more
  • Elite: Includes everything in Pro plus advanced analytics dashboards, compensation planning, benchmarking, and premium support

It also offers add-ons, which are not included by default, and you cannot purchase them without subscribing to one of the above plans. These modules include:

  • Payroll (U.S. only)
  • Benefits administration (U.S. only)
  • Time tracking

BambooHR alternatives

Think BambooHR isn’t quite delivering? Maybe it’s pricing uncertainty, limited plan flexibility, or capped features? You might find a better fit with Thrivea, which aims to simplify HR with clean usability and modular choices.

Thrivea: a modern HRIS built for simplicity and scale

Thrivea is an all-in-one HRIS platform designed for small to mid-sized teams (10–500 employees) that want clarity, flexibility, and power, without the complexity or cost of legacy HR tools.

Here’s what makes Thrivea a compelling alternative to BambooHR:

1. Free core HR plan (forever)

Unlike BambooHR, which doesn’t offer a free plan and hides pricing behind quote requests, Thrivea gives you immediate access to its core HR plan, which includes:

  • Employee records
  • Org charts
  • Roles and permissions
  • Workflow automation
  • Internal communications
  • Document storage
  • HR analytics

No credit card. No expiration. No surprises.

2. Modular add-ons, only if you need them

Rather than locking features into preset tiers (like BambooHR’s Core, Pro, or Advantage plans), Thrivea lets you enable premium tools as you grow, such as:

  • PTO tracking
  • Performance reviews
  • Priority support

This keeps your costs lean and tied to actual team needs.

3. Set up in under 3 minutes; no IT required

Thrivea’s onboarding is frictionless. Whether you’re an HR pro or a founder managing ops, you can:

  • Launch the platform in minutes
  • Customize fields and permissions without code
  • Import employee data with ease
  • Go live without technical support

4. Built for busy, non-technical teams

From self-service dashboards to automated workflows, Thrivea removes friction from everyday HR tasks. Employees can:

  • Update their own records
  • Request time off
  • Access documents
  • View org charts, all from one place

Meanwhile, HR saves hours by avoiding email chains, spreadsheets, or disconnected tools.

5. Compliance and security, out of the box

Thrivea is built with SOC 2, HIPAA, and GDPR compliance in mind. Features like:

  • Audit logs
  • Read receipts
  • Version history
  • Role-based access controls

…keep you audit-ready and protected, without extra configuration.

6. Actionable insights with built-in analytics

Unlike BambooHR, where analytics can be limited or tier-gated, Thrivea offers:

  • Live dashboards
  • Custom reports
  • Communication engagement tracking

 …even in its free tier.

Other BambooHR alternatives

If you’re looking for a BambooHR alternative, Thrivea gives you the automation, flexibility, and support you need, without the bloat or steep learning curve. But if you’re still exploring, here are a few other platforms you might want to compare:

  • Gusto
  • Rippling
  • Zoho People
  • Paycor
  • Deel
  • Connecteam
  • GoCo

BambooHR: Yay or Nay?

If you need HR software to organize employee information, manage time off, handle benefits administration, and run performance reviews, BambooHR checks those boxes. Its interface is clean, onboarding is relatively smooth, and for many HR teams, it does help reduce the admin burden.

But it’s not without limitations. Features are locked behind specific pricing tiers, and with no public pricing, it’s hard to know what you’re getting or what it’ll cost until you go through a sales call. And while it works well for standard HR tasks, users often note it lacks flexibility for things like workflow customization, full audit trails, or deeper performance analytics unless you upgrade to higher tiers.

And now we have Thrivea. It’s a newer player, but it’s built around modern HR needs: simplicity, transparency, and modular control. You start with a free forever plan that includes core essentials like employee records, documents, workflows, communication, and reporting, no credit card required. Then you add what you need, like PTO tracking or performance management, only when your team is ready.

Thrivea also goes further than BambooHR in several areas: it offers built-in workflow automation, self-service tools for employees, real-time analytics, and a setup experience that takes less than 3 minutes, with no IT help needed. It’s built for non-technical teams and designed to scale without the usual SaaS friction.

Bottom line:

BambooHR is a safe, established choice, especially for businesses that prefer a full-package approach. But if you want modular flexibility, clear upgrade paths, and more control without the pricing mystery, Thrivea is a refreshingly modern alternative worth considering.
